Reunion Time…

40+ family members come together

to hang out on Melbourne Beach.

We gather under umbrellas

and chill on the chaise lounges.

We play football, baseball,

and boogie board in the surf.

We swim in the pool

and relax in the hot tub.

We take over restaurants

and dine like kings.

We talk, tell stories, and laugh;

Oh, how we laugh!

We take so many pictures;

some formal and some not.

They’ll be compiled into an

amazing book for next year.

We gather in the party room

and tell tales of years past.

We are loud, and

we are fun.

We gaze joyfully at Mom and Dad

who got this incredible group started back in 1957.

And are grateful that they, along with Tammy, Bob,

and others lend their talents to make this happen.

Our time to visit.

Our time to catch up.

Our reunion…

Baby Brother Beotch…

the-cardigans-1997-billboard-1548

So we’re at Bunky’s on Friday night in Melbourne Beach, and I’m enjoying wine and chat with my baby brother, Todd. (I always laugh at the phrase “baby brother” as he is 49 years old.)

Now Todd is forever the family comedian, and he’s always handing out challenges. As we’re talking we could hear the following playing in the background:

“…Love me love me

Say that you love me

Fool me fool me

Go on and fool me…”

Todd: “I bet you don’t know this band.”

Me: “Let me think a minute.”

Todd: “You’ll never get it. You just don’t know. You’ll never get it.”

Me: “The Cardigans.”

Todd: “BOOM! You showed me. I’m your beotch. Your baby brother beotch.”

Yes, Todd…You are my beotch. You’re also one of my favorite people. Love you, Dude. Thanks for always making me laugh…

Bad Coffee…

So I’ve been traveling for a few days, and I had the pleasure of going to the Meininger Family Reunion in Melbourne Beach. Shout out to Dad, Mom, Tammy, and Bob for all of their hard work. It was an amazing weekend. I’ll be writing more about it in forthcoming posts.

But today I had coffee on the brain because we are out of it here at home. This means my son, Ethan, is walking around none too happy. I suggested a coffee run…

So we’re at the Melbourne Beach Hilton which we visit every year. Everything about this hotel is fantastic, but I found one area they can improve. We had yet to make the in-room coffee, so I suggested Ethan give it a try. Bad idea…Bad…Bad…

There was an odd little coffee maker on top of the refrigerator. It came with these coffee filled disks, cream, sugar…the works. Ethan anticipated his coffee jones would be met by this little machine. It was not…To quote Ethan: “Mom, it looks and tastes like murky water.”

We headed to the lobby with the plan to drive around and find a cup when we ran into some of our family: Debbie, Katie, Danny, and our good friend Robin. They were holding steaming cups of the best smelling coffee. Turns out there is a coffee bar in the lobby. Ethan was extremely happy!

So Melbourne Beach Hilton, since everything else about your establishment is top-notch, I say ditch the in-room coffee makers and just direct everyone to the lobby. It’s a great place to meet up and catch your morning cup o’ joe.

Payphones…

So who remembers payphones?

Back in the day, it cost a dime to make a phone call at a public payphone. Over time, the price went up to a quarter…I believe later it went even higher, but I have been a cellphone user for so long, I didn’t keep up with the payphone cost hikes.

Bottom line, those devices have gone the way of the dinosaur. For the most part…

Payphones still exist in airports, but the number is being steadily reduced as more and more people carry a phone at all times.

I recall in high school using the payphone to call Mom when I needed to be picked up after a track meet. If she wasn’t home, I hung out and tried again later. I couldn’t catch Mom on the road and say, “Swing by an get me when you finish at the market.” She didn’t have a cell phone. No one did.

Today, my kids shoot me a text when they need me. If I’m out and about, I just add them to my list of stops. It’s a different world now…

Grillin’…

close photography of grilled meat on griddle

So, it’s summer and you know what that means: grillin’…

If there’s ever the perfect time to grill a burger or steak, it’s in the summertime. Some people are so devoted to grilling, that they do not let bad weather get in the way of the perfect meal.

Take Mom…She is an expert griller and some of our best meals growing up came from the grill…even during winter…

You see Mom is such a devoted fan of grilling that she would go onto the patio during a major snowstorm in Indiana to grill our steaks. I kid you not; Mom would be in a winter coat and boots with snow falling heavily from the sky lighting up the grill. She’d come back inside to get the tenderized and marinated meat and would dash out to the patio to grill our meal. And it was always delicious.

I don’t know if I fully appreciated the awesomeness of this practice when I was young. But as an adult, I so get it. Thank you, Mom, for the years of yummy BBQ, no matter what the season.

Stranger Things and the 80s…

So Ethan has gotten me into the Netflix original Stranger Things. I’m usually not a fan of the sci-fi genre, but my son feels this show qualifies as a horror series. Either way, I love the show.

One element that attracts me to Stranger Things is the tie-in to the 80s. I attended college during this decade, and we tend to identify with the music we danced to during that time. And dance we did…

Stranger Things does an excellent job of representing the 80s in all its glory. The clothing is hysterical…Did we actually wear those outfits? And the music…oh the music! I drive my kids crazy because I sing along when the 80s songs are blaring in the background of the scene.

One element of the show is causing some controversy. Some of the main adult characters smoke, such as Joyce and in particular, Hopper. Apparently this season, parents have complained about this, and the writers intend to not portray characters smoking in future seasons.

Now, I don’t like smoking. But in the 80s, smoking was quite common. Sure, people knew that it was unhealthy, but often they had started smoking before the information about the negative health impact was available. So to have people smoking is appropriate to the timeframe, and to abruptly remove it is inauthentic. I don’t believe young children would see Hopper smoking and think, “Wow! That’s cool.” In addition, I don’t believe that Stranger Things is appropriate for those same young kids.

Just my opinion. If you’re a fan of the 80s, check it out…

Going with the flow…

So I’m fascinated by rivers. Some flow quietly, slowly, and methodically while others are wild, rushing, and loud.

Life is like a river. Sometimes everything is mellow and relaxed, and other times all hell breaks loose and you lose control. Here’s the thing about a river: No matter how forceful the water moves, it still keeps flowing (okay, unless you dam it up). Eventually, even the most aggressive rivers meet with an area of calm.

I’ve learned to go with the flow. When the water rushes in too quickly, just sit back, chill and see where it leads. Things will even out down eventually.

Lost Downtown…

So a couple of years ago, I attended a company function downtown. I think it was a Thursday. An event that should have lasted no more than two hours went on, and on, and on…

Since I got a ride to the gathering with a colleague, I’d have to make my own way home if I wanted to get a decent night of sleep. As it turns out, we weren’t that far from the office where my car was parked, so I skipped the taxi and took a walk downtown.

Now I knew where I was going, or so I thought…I soon found myself wandering aimlessly up and down the streets of the city.

But it was sort of cool…I mean, the bustling businesses that were so busy during the day were now desolate. The shopkeepers that were still on duty were overtly friendly, not expecting a patron at so late an hour. I discovered some businesses I was unaware of… an antique store, a tea shop, and an artist’s gallery to name a few.

Theoretically, I should have been nervous wandering alone, but somehow I wasn’t. There were enough beings around that I felt a sense of community with the other night owls. And I did find my way back to the office and the security of my auto.

Somehow, though, I feel that when we get lost, we somehow find ourselves. We feel free, gleeful, and open to opportunity.  The insecurities of being on my own at midnight were overshadowed by the adventure, and I look back fondly on that evening of solitude.
