Support Your Local Bands…

So Stef and I had a great time last night at the House of Blues. Four local bands came together to rock: M99, Leaving Haven, Soul Switch, and Devil’s Envy.

It got me thinking about how important it is to support local music. People often spend a small fortune to see a big name group, but you can have an enjoyable evening listening to  musicians from your own back yard. And the price is right…either very reasonable or, like last night, FREE!

House of Blues offers the opportunity for up and coming bands to play on the same stage as nationally signed artists. Plus the musicians are available to meet with after their set. I’ve gotten to know some band members after attending a couple of concerts, and it’s incredible to hear what inspires them to create.

So take some time to check out the local scene. Today’s new musician might make it big some day, and you can say, “I knew them when…”

Threading the needle…

So the other day, Stef had a loose button on his shorts. I offered to sew the button more securely. As he is not adept at sewing, he happily accepted.

Now the problem comes up…threading the needle…

You see, my vision is not what it used to be. I discovered that even with my readers on, I could not see the hole in the needle well enough to get the thread through. I have just the tool for such occasions: my magnifying glass.

Yes, I have one, and I use it more often than I’d like to admit. It’s particularly helpful for reading directions on packages and information about my prescriptions. But the use of my magnifier was limited because holding the lens required one hand and threading a needle requires two.

So I called Stef in to help. He held the hand lens while I attempted to thread the needle. The key word here is “attempted”. Even with my spectacles and the loupe, I still could not achieve my goal.

So I held the hand lens, and Stef did the threading. And he succeeded. He even managed to thread it a second time without the magnifier which led to bragging rights. Apparently, his vision is not as far gone as mine is…

Question: How many people does it take to thread a needle? (Giggles…)

The Price of Milk…

So Stef came home from the market appalled.

“Do you know that I can buy almost two gallons of gasoline for the price of a gallon of milk?”

Hard to believe, yet it’s true. Stef paid $2.38 a gallon for gas this morning and $4.05 for a gallon of milk. The price of gas is currently going down with the price of milk skyrocketing.

I did a little research and discovered that we’re just looking at good old supply and demand for both. Apparently fewer cows are making milk to meet the demand. The cost of feed went up last year, and farmers cut back on their cows. Any increase in milk price may have a ripple effect on the price of other dairy products, so expect to pay more for those as well.

The $2.38 per gallon for gas is just the beginning. It’s predicted that in some parts of the country people may soon be paying less that $2 per gallon. Two of the many reasons is that U.S. production of oil is booming and refineries are back up to speed after many problems last year.

Stef cracked me up before I had some answers. His theory: The cows went on strike.

A Trip to the Movies…

two white and red admission tickets

So when I was a teenager, Saturday night often meant a trip to the movies with friends. But it was a different world then, and I wonder how teenagers can afford this fun activity on a regular basis today.

You see, in my day, going to the movies was fairly cheap. Tickets on a weekend night ran about four or five dollars maximum, and popcorn was far less expensive than it is now. Matinees were awesome as they cost no more than three dollars.

Now the price has gotten ridiculous. It costs $13.69 for one movie ticket, and don’t get me started on popcorn. (FYI: The large popcorn with two large drinks: $20.79.) Imagine young people trying to take out a date. Consider that a family of four could cost about $100 for the movie with all the fixings.

I think I’ll wait until the movie comes out on Netflix, or Hulu, or Amazon…

The Hockey Pucks…

The Hockey Pucks…

When I was young

I was a bad cook,

and I mean

REALLY bad.

The only thing

worse than my cooking

was my failed attempts

at baking.

My brownies were famous,

and they acquired

a special nickname:

the hockey pucks…

Yes, the brownies were

very burned,

very hard,

and very unappetizing.

Perhaps it’s this

lack of success then

that made me determined

to bake well now.

It took years

of practice,

of patience,

of perseverance.

But I did it.

I succeeded.

I actually now make a dessert

that is loved by all who try it.

It’s cheesecake.

And it’s awesome.

So much so that I plan

to sample it to those I love.

So be ready.

On my next visit,

I will probably arrive

with cheesecake in hand.

I’ll always be known

for my hockey pucks,

but I’ll also be known for

some delicious cheesecake.

Stay groovy…
