More Iris Apfel…

Iris Apfel

So our “Accidental Icon” Iris Apfel has done it again. At the age of 97, she is the new face of Magnum ice cream. After signing with IMG models, Iris has been giving the likes of Cara Delevingne and Bella Hadid (previous Magnum models) a run for their money.

During the past decade, Iris has been a brand ambassador for many including MAC Cosmetics and Kate Spade. But you won’t see her walking the runway.

“How can I compete on runway? That’s ridiculous,” Iris has said.

Happy Hour…

So it’s 5:00 pm on an average Friday afternoon, and where is everyone? You guessed it, Happy Hour!

What is it with America and Happy Hour? I suppose because here there is a taboo in reference to drinking alcohol unless it is at a preordained, specified time. Yes, you can get away with drinking in the mid-morning if you are at “Brunch”, but that’s it because the clock seems to dictate when we imbibe.

Take a recent Heineken commercial…A fellow is getting applause over his presentation at work. He pops open a Heineken. Everyone at the conference table stares. He then shows them that it’s a Heineken 0.0 (“Great Taste, Zero Alchohol”), and suddenly, all is well.

In France, they would more than likely all be either enjoying a fine wine during the meeting or gathering after for a leisurely lunch and opening a bottle. There is no concern about when you drink because it’s not about drinking. The focus is on the experience, taking in the aroma, and savoring the flavor. This is perhaps why drinking “on the job” is a non-issue. You share time together. It’s not about overindulging.

We could learn a lot from the French…but in America, at least at work, stay sober and…

That morning Cup of Joe…

There’s nothing I like better than the smell of coffee in the morning. That aroma of a “Cup of Joe” just puts a smile on my face.

So where did the term “Cup of Joe” originate? It turns out it was named after Admiral Joe Daniels, a former Secretary of the US Navy. In 1914, he banned the use of alcohol on Navy ships, so coffee became the chosen beverage for sailors.

Now here’s the irony of the whole situation. I may love the smell of coffee, but I detest the flavor. So who creates the morning joy for me? My son, Ethan. He loves coffee, so as soon as he wakes up, he brews himself a cup. And I reap the benefits!

Sometimes you just gotta pin me down…

So with our busy lives, it can sometimes be hard to fit your friends into your schedule. Sometimes it’s just a matter of timing. Conflicting work agendas or ongoing obligations can keep even the best of friends apart.

I must confess that I have been guilty of this more than once. But I have a solution to the problem: Just pin me down.

My good friend Carolyn inspired this idea. We’ve been trying to get together for many months, and I just couldn’t make it happen. So this morning I got a text that read, “Girls breakfast: Me, you, and Patsy. Saturday, February 2nd. What time is good?”

I love it! She took the proverbial bull by the horns. She pinned me down, and now we are finally having a meetup. You so rock, Carolyn!

So ask a friend out, but if you have to, pin her down! Quality time together is worth assertive action. And don’t forget…

Candles…

Have you ever noticed how smells can impact how you feel?

As the dinner bell is about to ring, the aroma of the meal wafts through your home. Your mouth waters in anticipation. It’s amazing that the mere scent can make you more hungry. And food that smells good always seems to taste better.

It’s the same with candles. Burning a candle in your home spreads your chosen fragrance, and you just feel better about, well, everything.

I’m fortunate that my husband enjoys candles as much as I do. We recently spent quite a bit of time in our local candle shop choosing just the right one. The moment the bouquet reaches our nose, we immediately know if it’s a go or a no. (You should have seen the look on our faces when we once checked out a “beer” candle. A definite “no”…)

Our most recent find was Midnight Blue Citrus from Bath and Bodyworks. We’ve enjoyed it so much that in less than a week, we need to return for another. The essence from just this one candle can be experienced throughout the entire house.

So light up…a candle, that is.

Chillin’ on a Wednesday afternoon…

So what do you and your partner like to do on an afternoon of just chillin’? One of the many things my husband and I enjoy is watching historical dramas. One example is the television series called Versailles.

We first discovered Versailles on Netflix. It’s a period piece that premiered in November of 2016, set in mid-1600s France under the rule of Louis XIV. Louis decides to move the French court from Paris to his father’s former hunting lodge located in Versailles to force the nobles to submit to his rule.

What follows is amazing scenery, brilliant costuming, heavy drama, and a surprisingly accurate story. We enjoy verifying the storyline of historical dramas and have no patience for large scale embellishment. Stef is very interested in the landscape, the fashion girl in me loves to analyze the designs, and we both scrutinize the accuracy. Bottom line, chillin’ and catching up on the happenings at Versailles is a great way to relax during the afternoon of a busy week. We can’t wait for Season 3.

How about you? What do you or you and your partner enjoy doing on a lazy afternoon? Leave a comment, and let’s start a dialogue. And don’t forget to…
