So, what is your preferred workout environment? Do you hit the weight room or find a treadmill? Do you enjoy exercising in a class setting? Are you into Cross Fit or yoga? Do you like to go to the gym or is one set up at home?
The older I get, the more I’m drawn to the outdoors for my exercise. Am I attracted by the scenery, the sound of the birds, or the feel of a light breeze? I’m not sure why…Perhaps because on a treadmill, I’m going nowhere.
Some communities lend themselves to walking, so “working out” occurs throughout the day, and you don’t need to schedule the time. But for many Americans, a fitness regimen is not only desired but somewhat required. In the words of Nike, “Just do it!”
A journey of a thousand miles begins…Oh, hell no! I will not start this entry with so trite a statement.
But today, I took a step.
I’ve been off exercise for quite a while. Some medication I have to take had the side effect of weight gain. I should have been exercising to get the weight down, but being larger made me quite lethargic. When I did exercise, I felt like shit. It’s ironic that the one thing I should have done was made so difficult.
Fast forward to today. I was able to lower my medication, and the pounds fell off. But I was left with a less tight version of myself. So this morning, I did it. I took a step.
It’s not that impressive. The OCD side of me would have walked 5 miles. The logical side of me just wanted to get moving. So 1.2 miles later, I finished my racewalk. I had downloaded “MapMyRun” on my phone so I can track my progress. It’s not just about looking better. I want to improve my overall wellness.
